Sin

Missing The Mark.

The Greek word for 'sin' is 'hamartia' and it literally means 'miss the mark'. And that's the way we need to look at it, literally. We should view sin as 'missing the mark'. What we don't want to do is attach meanings other than what the author intended. No doubt sin is wretched, disgusting and awful; but as the word applies to the Christian experience the word simply means 'missing the mark'. Note too that where you see this word ('missing the mark') the author is usually quick to reminded us that the grace of God is at work to cleanse us from sin. We should give that fact equal or greater emphasis.

God is cleansing us; that is, forgiving us, allowing us to know that forgiveness, and then being completely forgiven, returning to fellowship with God and the service of His will.

When we're defeated we're of no use to anyone, including God. God designed us. He knows this about us. That's why His more excellent way builds us up with love, forgiveness and encouragement. Historically, so much of the focus has been on sin and wrath that the GRACE emphasis on the forgiveness of sin may seem unusual to you. Sin and wrath aren't to be ignored, but it's hard to imagine living a life of love, joy and power when fear, sin and wrath are your focus.
